I am a fully qualified Electrician registered with a trade body, registered to self certify under Part P of the Building Regulations, specialising in Domestic Electrical work.

In this blog I intend to show photographs of dangerous faults I have discovered and ridiculous installations.

I intend to update sporadicaly as when I find issues of note. all issues have been rectified and where necessary brought up to standard.

Here we go;

This is the remains of a double socket, the socket had been mounted very close to ground level and an adaptor used to supply a 2kW heater. the plug was welded into the adaptor. This was very close to causing a fire.

The customer reported that the appliance connected to this switched spur was not working. A previous attempt to connect the wiring had been done by poorly executed crimps to extend the conductors.

This is a new installation and the whole estate seems to be done is a simialr way. The Consumer Unit has been installed in the downstairs lavatory. Accessibilty regulations state that
it must be between 450mm from Finished Floor Level and 1.2m from FFL. I was able to sit on the Loo whilst testing the new addition to the installation I had been asked to provide. It would have been so much better to have installed a flush mounted Consumer Unit in the hallway on the other side of the partition wall.

If you look closly the busbar has burnt away - there should have been insulation on the Line (Live) busbar to prevent arcing which I guesss caused the problem.

The old Kitchen had just been ripped out I was asked to rework the wiring ready for a new one to be installed. All wiring to and from accessories should be either vertical or horizontal from the accessory. These cables were routed diagonally and were only just missed when the kitchen cabinet was hung.

Not the best of photos. I was asked to replace some  open backed downlighters in a hallway for Fire Rated units. Had to relocate this one as the previous installer had cut out the joist to accomodate the downlighter. Weakened the joist and a major fire hazard.
